Mentioned in the Domesday Book it was originally called Lamintone, a 240 acre manor with two mills.

It then passed into varying hands such as the Earl’s of Warwick the Bishop’s of Coventry & Litchfield and in 1160 to Geoffrey de Clinton the founder of Kenilworth Castle.

His son presented the Manor to the prior of Kenilworth who held it for 300 years.

Its name developed via Leminton to Lemyngton Priors in1533 and then to todays spelling.
The current full title of Royal Leamington Spa was gained by permission of Queen Victoria in 1838.

In 1783 the town/village was located on the south side of the river Leam and only had around 34 properties.

There are records of a spring and salt well as early as 1480 however it took some time before these gained any interest.

The Earl of Aylesford owned the land that the springs were on and restricted the use.
In 1784 a second mineral well was located on other land and the exploitation began.
In the 1800’s well’s were drilled and buildings erected containing hot, cold and douche baths ( douche French word appertaining to shower)

In the 1800’s on the north bank of the Leam the town started to grow , New pump rooms and baths were constructed.
These opened in 1814 and were extended due to popular demand two years later.
The popularity of ‘taking the waters ‘ declined and by 1850 the rooms were sold to the council.

At the same time the Great Western Railway was constructed.

The first house of the ‘new town’ on the north bank of the Leam was built in 1808 on the corner of Regent Street (then lower cross Street) and the Parade (then Union Parade).
1834 the first lawns and gardens were laid out initially Newbold Gardens they were changed to Jephson gardens 12 years later.

According to the 2001 census current population is 126,000 approx.
Currently Leamington and Warwick and appear to be developing into a conurbation.
